Clover Necklace: Meaning, What Each Leaf, Shape and Colour Says, and Why It Feels Familiar

Updated: 05 Oct, 2026 Published: 04 Oct, 2026
Clover Necklace Meaning

A clover necklace stands for luck, and more precisely for rare luck. A four-leaf clover turns up roughly once in every 5,000 clovers, so wearing one says you have found something most people walk past. Folklore gives each of its leaves a meaning: hope, faith, love and luck. A three-leaf clover (the shamrock) stands for faith in Ireland and for everyday happiness in Korea. A five-leaf clover is read as extra luck.

In India, the lucky-charm story is imported, but the shape isn't new. It's the chidi suit in every deck of playing cards. The Hindi word for clover, tipatiya, literally means "three-leafed". And the three-part bel patra offered to Shiva is a close visual cousin of the three-leaf clover. So what your clover necklace says depends on four things: how many leaves it has, its shape, its colour, and who gave it.

This guide covers all four. You'll also find what a clover means as a gift in different relationships, which colour to wear on each day of Navratri 2026, whether a clover necklace is a "copy", what clover necklaces cost in India right now, and how to choose one that survives daily wear.

The short answer

  • Four-leaf clover necklace: luck, especially rare or hard-won luck. The four leaves are often read as hope, faith, love, and luck.
  • Three-leaf clover (shamrock): faith in Irish tradition, where it's linked to St. Patrick and the Holy Trinity. In Korea, the three-leaf clover means happiness.
  • Five-leaf clover: extra luck. Some folk traditions add money or prosperity.
  • Clover with heart-shaped leaves: luck and love together. A popular choice between partners.
  • Open (outline) clover: the same meaning, worn more quietly.
  • Clover as a gift: "I'm lucky to have you", or "I'm wishing you luck" for a new job, an exam, a move, or a fresh start.
  • In India: the clover carries no religious, community, or astrological meaning, which makes it one of the easiest luck symbols to give across families and faiths.

Count the leaves first

Before you read anything else into a clover necklace, count its leaves. The number changes the meaning.

Leaves What it's called What it usually means How rare in nature
3 Clover, or shamrock in Ireland Faith (Ireland's Holy Trinity story); happiness (Korea) Almost every clover
4 Four-leaf clover Luck. Each leaf is often given a meaning: hope, faith, love, and luck About 1 in 5,000
5 Five-leaf clover Extra luck, sometimes money or prosperity About 1 in 24,000
6 or more Rare mutation A curiosity. No settled meaning About 1 in 312,000 for six

Odds from a 2017 European survey of about 5.7 million clovers across six countries. The figure you'll often see quoted, 1 in 10,000, is roughly twice as rare as the survey found.

Here's what those odds mean in real life. If you checked one clover every second, you'd find a four-leaf clover in about 83 minutes on average, and a five-leaf one in nearly seven hours. That is the quiet idea behind the charm. A four-leaf clover isn't luck like a lottery win. It's luck you find because you were paying attention.

For the record, the official Guinness World Record for the most leaves on a single clover stem is 63, cultivated by Yoshiharu Watanabe in Japan and certified in June 2024.

What the four leaves stand for

The most common reading is:

  1. Hope
  2. Faith
  3. Love
  4. Luck

Three of these echo the Christian trio of faith, hope, and love. The fourth leaf, the rare one, became luck (or in some tellings, God's grace) as Christian ideas blended with older Celtic beliefs. The order changes from source to source. What stays the same is that the fourth leaf is the lucky one, because it's the one that shouldn't be there.

The Korean way to read a clover

Korea draws a line between the two clovers that's worth knowing. A three-leaf clover means haengbok (행볡), happiness. A four-leaf clover means haengun (ν–‰μš΄), luck. The popular reflection that comes with it: don't trample a field of three-leaf clovers, which are everyday happiness, while hunting for one four-leaf clover, which is luck.

It makes a lovely line for a card that goes with a clover necklace: Wishing you luck, but mostly happiness.

Clover, quatrefoil or flower? Check the shape

Most "clover necklaces" you'll see in shops and on Instagram aren't botanical clovers at all. Three different shapes go by the same name, and each one shifts the meaning slightly.

Shape How to spot it What it adds to the meaning
Botanical four-leaf clover Heart-shaped leaves meeting at a centre, sometimes with a small stem Closest to the original lucky charm. Heart leaves add love
Quatrefoil Four rounded lobes, often with a raised border. Looks the same from every side Balance and polish. This is the "classic" clover necklace look
Four-petal flower Petals radiating around a centre stone Growth and fresh starts. Reads as a bloom first and a clover second

Where the quatrefoil comes from

Quatrefoil comes from Old French: quatre (four) and foil (leaf). The shape appears in Gothic church windows and Islamic arches, and one of its earliest known uses, at a monastery in Constantinople in 462 AD, is older than Islam itself.

In 1968, the Paris jeweller Van Cleef & Arpels turned it into one of the most recognised jewellery designs in the world: the Alhambra. Two ideas went into it. Jacques Arpels, nephew of co-founder Estelle Arpels, used to collect four-leaf clovers in his garden for luck. And the four-lobed arches of the Alhambra palace in Granada, Spain, gave the design its outline and its name. When people talk about "the clover necklace everyone is wearing", this is usually the shape they mean.

Is a clover necklace a copy?

This is one of the most common questions in India, where affordable clover jewellery is everywhere. The fair answer: the motif itself belongs to no one. Four-leaf clovers were described as lucky by 1620, and the quatrefoil is more than 1,500 years old.

Courts have looked at this too. In March 2025, France's highest court, the Court of Cassation, rejected Van Cleef & Arpels' unfair-competition claim against Louis Vuitton's four-lobed Blossom jewellery. Part of its reasoning was that framing stones in precious metal reflected a market trend that one house couldn't stop other jewellers from following.

What is a copy is a piece sold under another brand's name, or carrying its logo, signature or hallmarks. A simple rule: if a β‚Ή999 listing uses a luxury brand's name in its title, it is either a fake or a misleading description. Either way, walk past it.

Where the clover's luck comes from

When What happened
5th century (by tradition) St. Patrick is said to have used the three-leaf shamrock to explain the Holy Trinity in Ireland
1620 Sir John Melton's Astrologaster includes the earliest known written mention of four-leaf clovers as lucky: finding one meant "some good thing" was coming
Folklore Children were said to carry four-leaf clovers in the hope of seeing fairies. A later legend says Eve carried one out of Eden as a keepsake of paradise
1726 The shamrock and Trinity story first appears in writing, recorded by the botanist Caleb Threlkeld
Japan In hanakotoba, the Japanese language of flowers, the four-leaf clover simply means "lucky"
1968 Van Cleef & Arpels launches its Alhambra four-leaf clover design
Today The clover sits alongside the evil eye and the star as one of the most-worn lucky charms in jewellery

One detail most guides blur: the shamrock is Ireland's national emblem, not the four-leaf clover. The shamrock has three leaves. The four-leaf clover is a lucky rarity, not a national symbol.

What the clover means in India

India has no ancient clover tradition. Yet most Indians have seen the shape a thousand times without calling it a clover.

It's in your deck of cards

The clubs suit, chidi in Hindi, is a stylised three-leaf clover. Its original French name, trèfle, means clover. So every teen patti hand dealt at a Diwali card night has clovers in it. Hukum, paan, eent and chidi: the last of those four suits is the clover most Indians have already held in their hands.

Hindi names it by its leaves

The Hindi word for clover is ΰ€€ΰ€Ώΰ€ͺΰ€€ΰ€Ώΰ€―ΰ€Ύ ΰ€˜ΰ€Ύΰ€Έ (tipatiya ghaas), "three-leafed grass". That makes the four-leaf clover an exception announced by its own name: a tipatiya with one leaf too many. Which is exactly why it's considered lucky.

The bel patra connection

The bel patra (bilva leaf) offered to Shiva grows in threes: three leaflets on one stalk. Those three leaflets are said to represent Brahma, Vishnu, and Mahesh, or Shiva's three eyes. Bel isn't a clover, botanically. But it's the closest everyday Indian parallel to a three-leaf clover: a three-part leaf that already carries meaning in many homes.

One respectful note. A clover necklace is a fashion symbol, not a religious object. If bel patra imagery matters to someone, think of the clover as its own, separate symbol.

The "clover" in your garden probably isn't one

  • The tiny three-leaf plant with yellow flowers that pops up in Indian lawns and flowerpots is usually creeping wood sorrel (Oxalis corniculata). It's called amrul in Hindi and changeri in Sanskrit and Marathi.
  • The "lucky four-leaf clover" plants sold online are often Oxalis tetraphylla, a Mexican species that is neither a clover nor a shamrock.
  • India's real clover crop is berseem, Egyptian clover, sown in the plains from mid-September to the end of October as winter fodder for cattle. It's often called the king of fodders.

So in Indian fields, clover is cattle feed. In Indian jewellery boxes, it's a lucky charm.

Why that makes the clover an easy gift in India

Because the clover arrived here as a fashion symbol rather than a religious one, it carries no faith, community, or astrological meaning. That's rarer than it sounds. A nazar charm, a star and crescent, an Om, or a zodiac sign can all mean something specific to the person receiving it, or to their family. A clover simply says good luck.

That makes it one of the safest symbols to give a colleague, a new sister-in-law, a teacher, or a friend from a different background. It's also why the clover works so well as a first piece of "symbol jewellery" for someone who doesn't usually wear one.

What a clover necklace means as a gift

The same little clover says different things depending on who hands it over.

From To What it usually says Clover that fits
Partner Partner "I'm lucky I found you." One in 5,000, after all Heart-leaf clover
Parent Child leaving for college, a new city, or exams "Carry some luck with you" A small solitaire clover they can wear every day
Friend Best friend "Lucky to have you." Often given as a matching set Clover necklace and clover bracelet, one each
Manager or colleague New joiner, promotion, farewell "Good luck with what's next", with nothing personal or religious attached Open outline clover
Brother Sister, on Bhai Dooj (Wednesday, 11 November) Luck for the year ahead A coloured clover in her favourite shade
Bride Bridesmaids, as wedding season opens after 21 November "Thank you for standing with me" Matching small clovers
Anyone Someone after a hard year "Your luck is turning." Or the Korean way: "wishing you everyday happiness" A simple clover, three or four leaves
You Yourself A reminder to notice the good things Whatever you'll actually wear daily

What does it mean when a guy gives you a clover necklace?

Usually, that he thinks of you as lucky for him, or that he wanted to give something meaningful without it feeling too heavy. A clover isn't an engagement or commitment symbol the way a ring is. If the leaves are hearts, it leans more romantic. If it's a plain or open clover, it leans towards "I'm glad you're in my life" and "good luck".

Is it bad luck to buy a clover necklace for yourself?

No. There's no widely followed rule against it. There is a sweet folk belief that sharing a four-leaf clover doubles the luck for both the giver and the receiver, which is why clovers are such popular gifts. But buying your own isn't unlucky. Plenty of people buy one to mark a new job, a fresh start, or a goal they've set.

Clover colours and what they say

Colour adds a second layer of meaning. These are common associations, not rules.

Colour What it's usually read as Good for
Green The classic. Nature, growth, renewal. Closest to a real clover A first clover; anyone who wants the traditional look
White or colourless New beginnings, simplicity Daily wear. Goes with every outfit and metal
Red Love, energy, celebration Partners, festive and wedding season
Blue Calm, trust, focus Office wear. Also on trend: Pinterest's 2026 trend report noted searches for "icy blue" up 50%
Pink Affection, friendship Best friends, sisters
Purple Creativity, individuality Someone who likes standing out a little
Yellow Joy, optimism Haldi functions, summer, a cheerful gift
Black Grounding, a bold contrast on gold Minimal, monochrome wardrobes
Mother-of-pearl Softness, calm A gentle, understated gift

A coloured stone in a fashion pendant is a style choice. It isn't a prescribed astrological gemstone, so if you're following an astrologer's advice, ask them for the exact stone and specification.

Matching a clover to Navratri 2026

Navratri begins on Sunday, 11 October 2026. If you follow the colour of the day, a small coloured clover is an easy way to wear it every day, even with office clothes.

Day Date Colour A clover that works
1 Sun, 11 Oct Orange Plain gold or a warm yellow stone
2 Mon, 12 Oct White Colourless stones or mother-of-pearl
3 Tue, 13 Oct Red Red or garnet
4 Wed, 14 Oct Royal blue Sapphire blue
5 Thu, 15 Oct Yellow Yellow
6 Fri, 16 Oct Green Emerald green or green enamel
7 Sat, 17 Oct Grey Colourless stones or plain gold
8 Sun, 18 Oct Purple Purple or amethyst
9 Mon, 19 Oct Peacock green Emerald green or aqua

This is the widely used weekday-based colour list. Some families and regions follow a different scheme, so go with yours.

Which side of a clover necklace should face out?

Good news: a clover reads the same whichever way it lands. Unlike a crescent moon pendant, where flipping it changes a waxing moon into a waning one, a clover has no wrong side up.

What does change is the back. Many clovers are finished only on the front, so if the pendant turns over, you see a flat metal back or the underside of the settings. Before you buy, check:

  • Is the back finished, or is the piece double-sided?
  • Is the bail (the loop the chain passes through) snug, so the pendant stays facing forward?
  • Does the photo on a model show it sitting straight?

How to choose a clover necklace you'll actually wear

A clover is usually bought to be worn every day, close to the skin. These checks help it last.

  1. Pick the shape for your day: An open outline clover is the lightest and most minimal. A solid stone clover gives you colour. A charm or station chain, with several small clovers along it, is the most playful.
  2. Ask for the size in millimetres: Many listings show only the weight. A dainty clover is roughly 8 to 10 mm across. One large silver brand lists its clover pendant at 0.8 cm by 1 cm, which is a good benchmark for "small".
  3. Check the chain length: 16 to 18 inches (40 to 45 cm) puts a small pendant at the collarbone, which is where a clover looks best. Our necklace size chart shows every length.
  4. Read the stone name: Moissanite, cubic zirconia (CZ), lab-grown diamond, natural diamond, enamel, mother-of-pearl, and semi-precious stones like malachite or onyx are all used in clovers. The listing and the invoice should say which.
  5. Know what enamel is: Enamel is coloured glass fused onto metal. It gives the brightest, most clover-like greens, but a hard knock can chip it, so treat enamel pieces gently.
  6. Check what's under the gold: Stainless steel, copper, or brass under gold-tone plating is fine for a trend piece worn now and then. For daily wear, and for skin that reacts easily, nickel-free 925 sterling silver or solid gold is the safer base.
  7. For gold vermeil, ask for the micron figure. Vermeil has a much thicker gold layer than ordinary plating: at least 2.5 microns, against 0.5 microns or less for many plated pieces. Here's the full gold vermeil vs gold plated comparison.

If you plan to layer it, a small clover sits well under a shorter plain chain, or beside another symbol pendant. For more ideas, see our guide to the best daily wear necklaces, which looks at how different designs hold up to a real day.

Clover pieces to pair them with

All of these are in charm bracelets. If you're building a set over time, our guide on how to attach charms to a bracelet explains how to mix clovers with other symbols.

Clover designs we don't make, and your options

You'll see these across Pinterest and Instagram.

None of them are in our collection today:

  • Three-leaf shamrock pendants
  • Five-leaf clovers
  • Double-sided, bordered clovers inlaid with malachite, onyx or carnelian
  • Long necklaces with ten or twenty clover motifs
  • Solid gold or natural diamond clovers that hold metal value. For these, a hallmarked piece from a jeweller you trust is the better route

If you'd like a clover we don't make, such as a three-leaf version, a clover with your initial, or a clover in a stone colour that matches a date that matters to you, you can have one made. Fill in KYMEE's create-your-own form with the piece type, your budget, and a sketch or photo, and the team replies within 24 hours with ideas and a quote. KYMEE uses moissanite only as small accent stones, so any larger stone in a custom piece is cubic zirconia (CZ).

Caring for a clover necklace

  • Put it on last: Perfume, lotion, and sunscreen leave a film that dulls pavΓ© stones. Let them dry first.
  • Take it off for water: Remove it before showering or swimming. Chlorine, salt water, and steam slowly reduce shine.
  • Be gentle with enamel: Avoid knocks, abrasive polishing cloths, and harsh cleaners. A soft, dry cloth is enough.
  • Store it on its own: Keep each piece in a soft pouch or lined box, with chains laid flat, so they don't tangle.
  • Clean it simply: A slightly damp cloth with mild soap, then dry completely. Here's more on how to clean gold vermeil and how to clean moissanite.

KYMEE's jewellery care guide covers the rest.

FAQs

What does a clover necklace mean?
A clover necklace symbolises luck, especially rare luck, because only about one clover in 5,000 has four leaves. The four leaves are often said to stand for hope, faith, love, and luck. A three-leaf clover means faith in Irish tradition and happiness in Korea, while a five-leaf clover is read as extra luck.

What do the four leaves of a clover stand for?
The most common reading is hope, faith, love, and luck. The first three echo the Christian trio of faith, hope, and love, and the rare fourth leaf came to mean luck, or in some versions, God's grace. The order varies between sources, but the fourth leaf is always the lucky one.

What does a three-leaf clover necklace mean?
A three-leaf clover is the shamrock, Ireland's national emblem, which tradition links to St. Patrick, explaining the Holy Trinity. In Korea, a three-leaf clover means happiness (haengbok), while a four-leaf clover means luck. A three-leaf clover necklace is a nice way to wish someone everyday happiness rather than rare luck.

What does it mean when someone gives you a clover necklace?
It usually means they're wishing you luck or telling you that you're lucky for them. From a partner, it often means "I'm lucky I found you". From a parent, it's luck for a new chapter like college or a first job. In India, it's also a safe gift because it carries no religious meaning.

Is a clover necklace religious?
No. The four-leaf clover is a folk lucky charm, not a religious symbol, even though Christian ideas shaped the meaning of its leaves. The three-leaf shamrock is linked to St. Patrick in Irish tradition. In India, the clover carries no faith or community meaning, so anyone can wear one.

Is it bad luck to buy a clover necklace for yourself?

No. There's no widely followed rule against buying your own. Folk belief says sharing a four-leaf clover doubles the luck for both people, which is why clovers are popular gifts. But many people buy one for themselves to mark a new job, a fresh start, or a personal goal.

What is the clover necklace everyone is wearing?
Most people mean the four-lobed clover design made famous by Van Cleef & Arpels' Alhambra collection, launched in 1968. The shape is a quatrefoil, inspired by four-leaf clovers and the arches of the Alhambra palace in Spain. Many jewellers now make clover designs, because the motif itself is centuries old.

Is a clover necklace a copy of a luxury brand?
Not by default. Four-leaf clovers were lucky charms by 1620, and the quatrefoil shape is over 1,500 years old, so no brand owns the motif. A piece becomes a copy when it uses another brand's name, logo, or signature details. If a cheap listing uses a luxury brand's name, avoid it.

Which side of a clover necklace should face out?
Either. A clover looks the same whichever way it lands, so it has no wrong side up. What matters is the back: many clovers are finished only on the front. Choose a double-sided piece or a pendant with a snug bail if you want it to always face forward.

Which colour clover necklace is best?
Green is the classic, closest to a real clover. Colourless stones are the most versatile for daily wear. Red suits partners and the festive season, blue suits office wear, and pink suits friends and sisters. Colour meanings are associations rather than rules, so choose the shade the wearer will love.

What is a clover called in Hindi?
Clover is called ΰ€€ΰ€Ώΰ€ͺΰ€€ΰ€Ώΰ€―ΰ€Ύ ΰ€˜ΰ€Ύΰ€Έ (tipatiya ghaas) in Hindi, which means "three-leafed grass". The clubs suit in playing cards, called chidi in Hindi, is also a stylised three-leaf clover. Its French name, trΓ¨fle, means clover.

Is a clover necklace good for daily wear?
Yes, if you choose a small, light one. Look for a pendant of about 8 to 10 mm, a 16 to 18-inch chain, and a nickel-free base such as 925 sterling silver or solid gold. Take it off before showering or swimming, and treat enamel clovers gently.
